Yelapa

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

Catch a boat from Mismaloya or a water taxi from Los Muertos Pier or Boca de Tomatlan to the beautiful fishing village of Yelapa! This small village, accessible only by boat, is a must for many travelers. Once there you can grab a slice of pie from one of the pie ladies, enjoy drinks on the beach, or take a short hike up a cobblestone path to the waterfall, where you can enjoy a swim in the crisp water. If you desire a little more adventure, horseback riding tours are available. Who knows...you might even find a rooster in the local chapel.

Yelapa Waterfalls

If you have not previously hiked to the waterfalls in Yelapa and do not have a guide, please ask one of the friendly locals to direct you to the cobblestone path leading to the falls. This path will take you through the small village, past little shops and a few stands selling souvenirs. The path is, at times, a bit steep, and it is also used by horses so watch your step to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Reaching the first waterfall by foot is quite doable. Many take horses if they desire to continue deeper into the jungle to the second waterfall. Our personal preference is to hike early in the day, pick up a liquado from the drink stand on our way down, and then enjoy the beach (of course with a slice of pie!) before heading back to town.

Return to Puerto Vallarta

If you arrive by water taxi, confirm the departure time of the last water taxi from Yelapa. Typically the last water taxi leaves Yelapa around 4 pm. You will want to plan your day according to this schedule and remember to allow for time to board the water taxi. If you hire a private boat, coordinate your departure time and the pick up point. Chances are, if taking a private boat, by the time you arrive in Yelapa you will be friends with those running the boat and they will likely be happy to show you around town. Many will even join you on your hike if you desire.
